Understanding Types of Transformer in Electrical Systems

In a power project, the phrase types of transformer in electrical systems can cover more than one product. A distribution transformer is used close to the final load, while a power transformer works at a higher level in a substation or plant supply line. A dry type transformer is often placed indoors where oil equipment is not easy to manage. An oil immersed transformer is still common in outdoor yards because it handles a wide capacity range and is familiar to site teams.

The right type is usually decided by voltage, capacity, room condition, cooling method, noise rule, and maintenance space. For example, a factory power room may care about fire safety and ventilation. A grid yard may care more about oil system, lifting space, and short-circuit strength. Looking at the place first makes the selection more practical. It also makes drawing review, factory testing, and later maintenance much easier for the whole project.
