Applications of Dry Type Transformer
General Power Distribution
The most fundamental application is as the main service transformer. It takes the medium voltage (e.g., 13.8 kV) supplied by the utility and steps it down to a lower utilization voltage (e.g., 480/277V or 208/120V) that is then distributed throughout the building via panelboards and switchgear.
HVAC Systems
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are among the largest electrical loads in any commercial building.
Lighting Systems
While individual light fixtures run on standard voltage, large-scale commercial lighting systems are often fed from dedicated transformers. A dry type transformer might step down 480V to 208V or 120V specifically for the lighting panels that control thousands of fixtures across multiple floors.
Elevator and Escalator Systems

Dry-type transformers are available in three general classes of insulation. The main features of insulation are to provide dielectric strength and to be be able to withstand certain thermal limits. Insulation classes are:

Installation Precautions for Dry Type Transformer

1. The Installation area should be dry, free from dust, excessive moisture, fertilizers, chemicals and other corrosive fumes or vapors, and separated from flammable materials in accordance.
2. Access pathways to the location must have enough clearance to move the transformer in place. Avoid stairways and elevators if possible.
3. The floor area should be smooth and level, and able to support the weight (in pounds/sq. ft) of the transformer. Reinforced concrete is preferable.
4. Dry type transformers must be installed in a level upright position in an area with free air circulation. Installing the transformer in a NEMA enclosure locking it in a room for safety and security is strongly recommended.
5. Avoid locations that could be subject to flooding or exposed to moisture or ambient temperatures in excess of 30°C.
6. Do not install dry type transformers beneath wet fire suppression sprinklers. Use a dry or foam fire suppression system if needed.
