Effective Electricity Distribution

The power transformers efficiently transmit electrical power over long distances. They can effectively increase or reduce the current in transmission lines. They help you minimize energy losses during distribution and produce a high percentage of power that reaches you.

Enhanced Safety

Power transformers are designed with safety features that protect your electrical system from faults and overloads. They isolate different sections of the power network and prevent the spread of electrical disturbances. So they minimize the risk of damage and enhance your overall systems’ functionality and reliability.

Multiply Profit

These transformers contribute to significant cost savings in your operations. They minimize energy losses and utilize the unused power. It means you are liable to pay lower generation costs and minimize the need for additional infrastructure.

Freedom Of Utility

Power transformers are available in various sizes and configurations. So you can use them for your wide range of applications such as running industrial plants, substations, and manufacturing equipment as well as residential services. Their customization enables them to meet diverse energy demands.

Ecological Benefits

These transformers are designed with modern technology. Their advanced materials and innovative designs reduce energy losses and utilize renewable energy as well. These features help you minimize the environmental impact of power transmission and enable you to develop an independent and sustainable energy infrastructure.

Applications of Power Transformer

Substations

Transformers in substations play a key role in high-voltage transmission. Here, step-up transformers elevate distribution voltages for efficient long-distance power transmission through transmission lines. On the other hand, step-down transformers lower transmission voltages for distribution to towns and cities through distribution lines.

Power Plants

Within thermal and hydroelectric power plants, generators produce electricity at a voltage suitable for efficient generation, which may differ from transmission standards. Hence, station service transformers adjust the voltages to the required transmission levels before sending them out through transmission lines.

Copper Mines

Because of the fire and explosion risks underground, copper mines require specially designed isolated transformers. These transformers have enclosures surrounding the coil assemblies to prevent arcing from causing ignitions in hazardous mine atmospheres.

Residential Distribution

Pole-mount transformers located on utility poles along streets help reduce distribution voltages even further for safe usage levels in homes. Pad-mount transformers installed above ground at housing complexes perform a similar voltage conversion function for supplying various residential loads.

Installation Steps For Power Transformers

Transporting and Positioning the Transformer
Use heavy-duty cranes and rigging to carefully unload and position the transformer onto its foundation. Ensure that the transformer is level and stable on its pad to prevent mechanical stress.

Grounding the Transformer
Proper earthing (grounding) is essential to prevent electrical faults and ensure safety. Connect the transformer’s neutral and tank body to the grounding system using copper/aluminum conductors.

Installing Bushings and External Components
Mount high-voltage and low-voltage bushings properly to ensure electrical insulation. Connect radiators, conservators, and breathers if applicable (for oil-filled transformers). Install protective relays, current transformers (CTs), and voltage transformers (VTs) as needed.

Filling Transformer Oil (For Oil-Filled Transformers)
If the transformer is shipped without oil, fill it with filtered, moisture-free insulating oil up to the required level. Conduct dielectric strength tests to ensure the oil quality is within the acceptable range.

Pre-Commissioning Tests
Before energizing the transformer, various electrical tests must be conducted to confirm operational integrity. Conducted using a megger to check insulation quality between windings and ground. High-voltage test applied to check insulation endurance under normal operating conditions.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between transformer and power transformer?

A: Power transformers are used in high voltage transmission networks, and distribution transformers are used in low voltage distribution networks.

Q: Is a power transformer AC or DC?

A: A transformer fundamentally works with Alternating Current (AC) because it relies on a constantly changing magnetic field to induce voltage, which AC provides; Direct Current (DC) creates a steady field that doesn't work, though some "AC-to-DC" adapters use a transformer followed by rectifiers to produce DC output for devices like phones. You can often tell if a device uses AC or DC by looking for the symbol on the label: a wavy "~" for AC or a straight line "—" for DC.

Q: What is a power transformer also known as?

A: A power distribution transformer is also popularly known as an isolation transformer. It changes high voltage to low voltage applied in electric energy distribution. Thus, it provides the final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution system.

Q: What are common power transformer problems?

A: Electrical failure of a transformer typically happens from damage to the insulation. This destruction may happen naturally over time. However, other causes include excessive voltage, frequent fault currents, mechanical damage to the insulation or overloads that increase degradation.

Q: What is the lifespan of a power transformer?

A: On average, the industry benchmarks for transformer longevity are as follows: Dry-type Transformers: Typically last between 20 and 30 years. Power Transformers (oil-filled): These can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years, depending on the operating conditions and the frequency of maintenance.

Q: Can a power transformer be repaired?

A: In most cases, you can either repair or replace transformer coils in case of damage. Depending on the nature of damage and the method adopted, the transformer may go back to its full functionality or not.
